1.4 diesel 6N2 won't start

My 1.4 TDI 6n2 (X reg) turns over but won't start.

Symptoms when ignition is turned on:
* No glow plug light
* No "whoosh" noise (which I presume is fuel priming?)
* A lowish tone "bonging" sound plays I think 5 times, about 1 per second.

I've checked fuses etc, cracked open and checked all the connectors I can find, and even replaced good ol' relay 109 - no joy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I would suggest getting the car scanned with VCDS to find out what's going on. Sounds like a sensor is misbehaving

Ok - is it worth getting a scanner from ebay or similar (there seems to be a few on there), or is this something that must be done by the pros?

A cable from eBay will be enough to give you the codes

Ok, I've acquired a diagnostic reader and plugged it in, but am getting a "linking error" which I'm assuming is basic failure to communicate with the car/ECU?

A few more questions then:
1) What exactly does this "bonging" tone (sorry I don't know how else to describe it!) mean? There are no unexpected warning lights or anything on the LCD.
2) Where exactly is the ECU itself?
3) There are "normal" diagnostic code readers (usually orange like the one I have) and then there are VCDS ones (usually blue, sometime hand held units and sometimes adaptors with USB leads) - are they essentially the same? I've read of people trying the normal one but being told to try the other as it's better?

Also, please forgive my naivety but why are people posting stuff about the 6n/6n2 in the MKV forum? I was under the impression that the MKV was referred to as the 6R and wasn't introduced till 2009?
