New member - problem with ignition key won't turn fully

I bought a 2010 Polo a few weeks back and after problems with the battery going flat and recharging, I now find I cannot turn the ignition key to
start the motor, it just goes about a quarter of an inch to the right and stops. The steering wheel also seems to be locked. Is this a problem that
I can fix or should I call the garage where I got the car? All suggestions gratefully considered!

JFYI, I'm a first timer here and also - at the late age of 58 - a learner driver who knows bugger all about cars, so thanks in advance for your help!

Try turning the steering wheel left/right when turning the key. If the steering is locked, you won't be able to turn the key till you release the steering lock.

Thanks for that, but I have no idea how to release the steering lock.

A family member in the UK (I live in Ireland) said it might be due to the battery being flat, but have just spent the whole day recharging it so it doesn't
seem to be flat

Thanks in advance for your help!

To release the steering lock you need to wiggle the steering wheel left and right whilst trying to turn the key

You'll get what I mean when you try and do it
