Advice on Speaker Upgrades

Hi Guys,
I am looking to upgrade the audio system in the car, I don't want to change the head unit as it suits the car, and I don't want to spend ridiculous money on the upgrades. My problem is the bass is too weak and when enhanced, the speakers distort, so I believe my options are to upgrade the stock speakers or add a sub. I am trying to avoid adding a sub as its extremely space consuming in such a small car, but will consider one of these plug and play slim line subs. I am just looking to see if anyone has done any speaker upgrades and if they have any advice and guidance on the matter.
My car is a 1.4 2010 Polo SE 3DR.
Thank

Check out my post 'my shadow blue gti' I'd recommend the Helix sub and amp combo which goes into spare wheel well, I'm very pleased with improved sound

Thanks for the reply, the Helix sub looks brilliant, but is there any way to avoid losing the spare wheel, think I would prefer to keep that in the car just in case.
