Wanted to replace the timing chain on 2004 Polo 1.2
Discovered that the engine has been sealed shut with some type of permanent mastic. Simply cannot prise it apart. Any ideas. Have tried hammer and screwdrivers / chisels and a blow torch. Still won't come apart. Scared of cracking the plate or - worse - the main block. HELP!

Which part are you trying to open exactly?

The side plate on the right (passenger side) of the engine that has to be removed to replace the timing chain. All bolts etc came off OK but the whole plate is glued shut with some form of appoxy resin or mastic

The part that will not come away from the main engine is the timing chain cover.

That seems a bit odd that a sealant so permanent has been used
