The wife’s recently got a GTi and it rolls back/forwards when on a hill when you let go of the foot brake after about a second. Is this normal as my dsg mk5 golf doesn't seem do this.

Yes, I think it's normal. Certainly, it's what my GTI does anyway, so I'm assuming they all do it.

Not noticed it but I'll try it out on the way home. I have a natural reaction to keep either the brake or the accelerator fully pressed.

I still hate "hill hold assist".
My friend's 2012 Scirocco has it. I went to move it off his drive, which is on a hill. I put it in reverse and put my foot on the brake. I let off the handbrake, then released the footbrake....and nothing happened. I touched the brake pedal and the damn thing shot down the drive like a rocket. Good job there was nothing behind it.
Bloody terrifying and un-necessary piece of "because we can" technology

Well I can confirm that after a delay hill hold does switch off. To be fair that's probably sensible. It's give you enough time to get to / from the brake. Then assumes that you do indeed want to roll under the power of gravity.
I'd never really thought about it before but it turns out I use it like this to get into the garage every night. Maybe I'm just slow at reacting

It should be possible to turn it off.
Reverse parking on a hill is a nightmare in our Polo. I nearly hit the car downhill twice last time l tried it, and l drive a van all day every day, so would consider myself at least competent.

It is possible to permanently disable it.
In my unit brakes: Component:
ESP8.2i front H05 0001

They are not the same bits in other brake units. The dealer can disable it.
