I have vw polo 1,6 16v gti, year 2000.

I want to install rain / auto dimming rear view mirrors in my car. I currently have standard ( twist open ) rear view mirrors. and I want to change my headlight switch to new style auto switch (it has smaller plug on the back. unlike old big one).

I bought vw golf mk4 r32 rear view mirrors / rain sensor and relay from ebay. I also have the plug which connects with relay from ebay seller.

I found the following thread on this forum, it looks great but the relay I got with the kit I bought is bit bigger? ant ideas ?

Not sure how to program / connect the relay and convert the old style switch plug to new style.

You need the 6N2 specific relay which is number 427 - its around 80 quid from the dealers

The wiring is ready to be accepted in the plug underneath the bonnet pull (the three wires from the rain sensor, plus the three wires from the mirror and the ground just goes to the chassis), then the new auto wiper relay just swaps with the existing relay for wipers on the fuse board

The wiring colours are slightly different on the mk4 golf to the 6n2 so youll need to ensure you match the pinouts up

Theres also no programming. You just knock the wiper arm down once to what used to be intermittent which is now rain sensor

You'll also need a new rain sensor windscreen to do the job properly

Ive done the auto dimming mirror/rain three times in 6N2s now

I just bought the AUTO HEADLIGHT SENSOR Kit from ebay (thank you for the link).

I have asked dealers to give me quote for mount plate for my windscreen. This is what they said (The mount plate is £11.84 inc VAT, you will need a very good glue to fix it though..). please advise? do I need new windscreen?

I recently installed relay .99 for my wipers, you mean I need to replace it with 427 ?

I will do the wiring over the weekend. if I have all the parts by then.

Mount plate is pointless - the rain sensor goes in the middle, and currently your windscreen will have the existing mirror mount plate where the rain sensor has to sandwich to the windscreen

If you want it to be proper, youll need a new rain sensor specific windscreen fitted

I thought - I will be able to remove the old mount and glue new mount (which is bit bigger) on the windscreen?

also, do you know roughly how much the specific windscreen might cost?

The old mount is near impossible to remove without breaking the windscreen, then youd have to polish off the ceramic dot it bonds to - not worth it

A new windscreen would be your insurance excess (normally 75 quid) but youll need to request a rain sensor version to be installed.

Hi Alex,

I got my relay today. Here are some pictures.. Just wondering if all the wiring I need is already there is the car? or I need to wire all the way to the specific area (as you mentioned earlier).

You'll need to do the wiring from the mirror and rain sensor down to the plug next to the bonnet pull. All the wiring is in place after that point.

Hi Alex,

My insurance declined my request to change the windscreen to the rain sensor one. they will only pay for standard one which is currently fitted in my car. Then, I checked with auto glass they quoted £300 fitted.

Wondering, if you can help me in finding the right material so that I can fit my current mount and electrical's. without changing the windscreen.

Found following article for retrofitting the mount. but I cant seems to find the black tape like material which holds the mount ( Part number for the mount 6X0973374 ). http://www.myturbodiesel.com/wiki/rain- ... on-vw-diy/

I'm not sure where you'll put the rain sensor

The mount can be bonded with Tigerseal. I've used this historically and it works great

but the Mount has a little edge. means its not flat so it will stick to the glass. its has a 1 - 2 mm edge for some reason.

I will give it a go..
