adding cigarette lighter sockets...

...to make some discreet power points within the car, IE, armrest, glovebox etc - can this be done. is it a case of cutting existing lighter wires and splicing more in, or does it have to be separate direct from the battery?

people splice in to the cigarette lighter all the time for power to things like boost gauges, extra lights etc so it is possible.
but because you are adding more resistance into the circuit you need to either be careful of what you use as you might overpower the circuit, or up size of the cable/fuse....
