Ive had this proplem since ive bought my 6n2 GTI about 6 months ago but never got round to looking at it, Bassicly when in 1st, 2nd or 3rd and am going into the high revs 5-6k (drivng Fast) it get very hard to change gear i have to to really force it in ? does this mean the gearbox is knackered ? its done 80k and never been replaced.

You probably have a worn set of shift cables. The linkage is prone to wear. Replace these and the problem should go away
