Hi Guys

My 2008 1.2 Polo has failed it's MOT and I've been quoted the following:

1) Rack GAITER - O/S gaiter insecure - £111.97
2) N/S/F lower suspension arm bushes deteriorated causing excess movement - £172.57
2) O/S/F lower suspension arm bushes deteriorated causing excess movement - £172.57

Are these faults common and are the quotes reasonable?

Any help appreciated.

That seems alot of money to fix the rack gaiter

The bushes are a common failure point on these - that seems reasonable.

Tut, Tut, I'm guessing that you just stick the car in a "hope" - no periodic servicing that should have spotted that? My wife's late 2002 1.4 SE with 102K miles only got a couple of advisories, ARB mounting bushes looking a bit old, and a rear box that might have a slight gas leak!

It has an annual service which is done in October of every year even though the car only does school runs.

I agree, maybe ask politely for a breakdown of costs for that job. From the description, the least that needs doing is buying and fitting new clamps for the gaiter - most per side should be, remove TRE, remove track rod locking nut, remove gaiter clamps, remove gaiter, fit new gaitor, secure it with two new clamps, refit track rod locking nut, refit TRE probably using new nut if it has been removed from the hub assembly, check/adjust tracking.

Consider getting Seat Cupra lower bushes unless you trust the revamped standard version - don't dismiss using the Seat Cupra "go-faster" bushes as they are "last for ever" bushes, well the ones on wife's 2002 Polo have been on for 7 years and are still as good as new!

Ah, at the age that car is now, consider getting the servicing done prior to the MOT.

I think that's probably a good idea.

Re the MOT, I took the car to a local independent garage who failed on just the offside bush - they are charging £7 for the part and £55 for labour. Quite a difference!!

get prices elsewhere.
i could do all of that for £200! including the mot!
