Volkswagen to start car production in Iran

VAG in Germany has announced a joint-venture with Kemal Auto works from Iran to produce 20,000 Gol and other models a year at a new factory near the historic city of Bam.
The first model offered will be the Gol Comfortline, with a 105bhp 1.8-litre engine, dual airbags, air-conditioning and manual transmission - plus a host of modifications to adapt the Brazilian-designed car to the extreme temperatures found in central Asia (from -40 to +40ºC depending on the altitude!).
Cars will be fully assembled in Iran from Brazilian components shipped in CKD form.
Other models (Fox and Polo) may follow the Gol in the coming years.
The Gol has been the best-selling car in Brazil for the past 17 years. It is also the best-seller in Argentina and Mexico. VW hopes it'll also become the best-selling car in China in the near future.
Not so bad for the much-loved VW veteran!
((And on a personal note I must say that Gol interiors don't rattle, even if they're made from the same materials as the Polo's. Not that the Iranians would care I suppose).
