Hi all,

I'm about to order a new SEL 1.2 TSI and was going to spec sat-nav, but now I'm not so sure.

Is it worth the extra £700? There's a top of the range TomTom for £250

On the one hand I like the idea of having everything built in, but I also like the look of the TomTom features.

With the Discover system, can you use the navigation features and listen to radio stations at the same time?

why not use Sygic, Google Maps or Tom Tom on a smart phone - Much cheaper and works with blue tooth

I have a Blue GT on order with all the options, but I didn't take the satnav. Yes, it looks nice, but they're soon obsolete (I'm waiting for the Google Streetview generation) and, crucially, you can't take them with you when you fly abroad and rent a car.

I will be using my iPhone or my good ol' TomTom.

It depends on how much you'll use it. If it's only occasional, then it's probably not worth the outlay, but if you'll be using it often then I think it's worth it.

Couple of points to note: the display is larger than most phones and (I think) it also shows directions on the instrument display too.

Having used my phone (Sony Xperia Compact - 4.3" display) with Navigator attached to the windscreen, I find the display a little too small and too far away to make quick, accurate assessments of what the application is displaying and the text (such as miles to next turn, etc.) is much too small to read safely whilst driving.

Having not ordered it with the first B GT delivered in November, I have decided to add it to the replacement that's due in March. I had ordered MirrorLink (in the hope that this might be a cheap way to get navigation on the Composition Media display) but it wasn't available, so by deleting that option and adding Nav at the discounted price, I'm only paying £489.50 for the built-in sat-nav (granted that's still twice the price of a TomTom, but you only live once!).

Thanks for the replies. I'll be using it daily for a 40-mile commute to help avoid traffic and probably once a week for longer journeys. I'm currently using the Maps and More that comes with the Up, and it works pretty well although I find the screen a bit small for my ageing eyes (takes longer to accommodate nowadays from viewing the road ahead to seeing close to).

I Didn't order it, as I was trying not to take the mick on speccing a company car.....

But it is actually quite good. I have a Mk7 Golf on loan atm while I wait for my Blue GT - the convenience of the display in the instrument cluster (next instruction and distance to it) and the decent size screen would make me think hard about it. It also means you can have the radio or status up on one screen and nav on another.

As said before it depends how much you are going to use it, the more you do the more you will appreciate not having a tomtom stuck to the screen and wires running around the place.
