Hi I have a H reg 1.3gt polo and it started to play up on its usual journey,
where it would miss a couple of times and then stall and not restart until 5 mins later, well today it cut out and would not fire for 2 hours! as this is a
total pain and I am not an polo expert has anyone got any suggestions?..
Thanks guys
Frank :(

not firing, but still turning over?

Can you hear your fuel pump prime?

Could be hall sender, or coil. Dont bother going through the expense of replacing leads and plugs, rotor arm, dizzy cap etc. No point.

Could disconnect blue temp sensor plug to distinguish between ignition fault and fuelling fault. But it does sound more ignition related and hall sender-ish due to occasional missing and failure to restart. Spray WD40, into the plugs of the coil and into the hall effect sender plug (3pin) on top of distributor.

A new hall sender is £35. This is a common problem on MK3 Polo's, along with the renowned crap Coil.

Hi mate thanks for the fast reply very appreciated and informative,
I will check all those points out and thinking back when I used to own a
RS turbo the hall sender went on that very similarly!

supposedly the coil is... not the best 1 ever produced. Ive got a similar prob on my Gt but the guy who had a look at it says he thinks its the ignition switch.

*reminds me to go2 VW to but a new 1!*

Hi mate, it does sound like an ignition oriantated problem. Like paul said investigate the dizzy/hall sender and coil. The standard mk 3 coil isnt up to much and it's definately worth replacing with a golf mk 2/3 digifant system as it perks the car up (a good mod).
I will try and organise what you were after, soon.

Any partcular madels that this coil is fitted to? I'm guessing anything that isn't CL? And how easy is it to do? I simple bit of unplugging one, and installing another?

Thanks.

Karl.

I will try and do a guide to the golf ignition system upgrade. Basically you are looking for the Mk 2 golf / jetta / passat or early Mk 3 golf which has digifant injection. You need the coil, amplifier and wiring to replace the crappy single unit on the polo.

any Golf/Jetta etc... that runs 8valve digifant. this is late mk2 golfs & some early mk3s. There is a guide to it on http://www.polog40.co.uk in the modifications section under Engine Efficiency

It does mention just the GT and the G. I'm not sure therefore whether I can do it on mine. Mind you, it doesn't say you can't...

Of course you can do it. For any Mk 3 polo (excluding diesel, obviously) it will work, but you are likely to feel an improvement with a GT or G40.

Well I changed the Hall sender etc and it seems okay (fingers crossed)
so Have just ordered a K&N panel filter to help it breath a little better
done this on my wifes golf gti 16v and it made a big difference
(although she sold it and bought a willy 2!)
next upgrade decat and chip when available

Yes, they are available. I will try and organise meeting up next week or so, as I will have time off work and will be down your way.
Yeah, the K&N panel will help especially if you modify the air box in the right places.
