Faulty Windscreens BGT

Hi All,

I've had my BGT for 6 weeks and it had to go in for a new windscreen due to a stress crack right in the corner. It's cracked again within 5 days and is now in for investigation. My dealer has looked after me and given me good courtesy cars each time and promised I won't get the car back until the matter has been fully investigated.

I've been told by the warranty manager who looks after my brand of dealerships (Lookers) that they've had several BGTs all come in with the same problem recently and it's down to a faulty batch of windscreens from VW. Just a friendly warning to anyone that suddenly gets a crack, take it to your dealer and get them to sort it. The symptoms are it cracks inside and right in the corner of the windscreen each time.

Is it a specific corner or the same one each time?

Weird. I didn't know the BGT's windscreen was specific. Thanks for the heads-up.

Mine has gone in exactly the same corner and both cracks were identical. Apparently the Blue GT and GTI use a different windscreen to the standard polo that is "stronger" as they both go faster.

Just an update. There appears to have been a batch of dodgy windscreens but they are in 12 month cars. My car has a twisted chassis, which means serious words will be had with VW as I've only had the thing 8 weeks :(

 How did they find that out?

When the second new windscreen went in there's a clear dip where it's been cracking where the windscreen meets the roof. The rest of the roof and windscreen are uniform in gap, so there's a fault with the frame. I'm absolutely gutted as I love that car.

Wow, well at least you'll be getting a brand new car... I hope... or are they going to try a repair?

Discussing that tomorrow when I take it back in. Part of me wants a new car but I've become attached to this one. Besides which I'm getting the new GTi as a courtesy car whilst I wait for mine to be repaired/new car to arrive :D

That's good... and bad. You're going to miss the GTI's power when you get the BGT back, unless you get a tuning box

I know you're attached to your car but a bent chassis is NOT good - i would insist on a new car as this sounds pretty serious.

Some years ago I bought a Lotus Elise and managed to crash it into a lamppost two days later (diesel on the road) - anyway, it was a close call between being a write off and I was offered a full payout but instead asked for the car to be repaired. It had a new chassis but was never the same, it drove fine but the finish was poor because it had been stripped down and rebuilt from scratch and the garage just couldn't match the quality control of the factory.

I always regret having it repaired, I was really attached to the car and it was so low mileage but I should have just taken the money and bought another one.

Just my thoughts...

Cheers Dave. Although I'm attached to it I'm going to push for a new car as it'll take some time to be fixed and I won't trust it. I'll also be pushing for some free upgrades as the car has now been in 4 times in 7 weeks - once because it came with the wrong wheels (silver instead of black) and three times now for the screen issue. I'd welcome opinions on what are good upgrades to push for as I just have a standard BlueGT

I agree you should go for a new car.

As for options, winter pack (heated seats) are great in the winter and the sunroof looks fantastic, esp on a white car. I sort of regret not getting the satnav; I don't really need it, but it would be good for resale.

I want Blue Silk with Anthracite wheels again, love the look of my car. I did toy with sat nav, but I have an Android phone so wondering if Mirror Link would be better. Also wondering about adaptive cruise control as that was quite nice on the golf.

Not so keen on the blue now that it's offered across the range, TBH, though I suppose you could say the same about white! I had adaptive cruise in my Jag XKR and didn't like it at all, but maybe VW has a better system. Mirror link makes sense if you have Android.
