Does anyone know if these are "interference" engines? i.e. if the cam belt was to break, would all the valves get bent as the pistons come up out of sequence or would they miss each other? Just curious really

It's my understanding that if the cambelt breaks on any engine the pistons and valves smack into each other. It certainly did on my brothers golf. OUCH new engine please!

That's true for a lot of engines but there are exceptions. The 2lt Pinto engine that I've got in my Tiger kit-car won't damage the valves if the cambelt went (good thing as there's no room for the cover!). I just wondered if anyone knew for sure regarding the 16v engine.

yes the vavles will hit the pistons if the cambelt snaps

there is a vauxhall engine i think which has a 'floating head' in which if the cambelt snaps it survives!! nice thought!

anyway the answer to your question is yes it will
