Possible Gearbox issue, ideas?

Hi guys,
Today whilst driving along I came to a set of red lights and stopped as normal, I then went to go when they went green and found that I had no gears whatsoever. All of them gone. After wiggling the gear stick for a while I managed to find second gear which was located where first gear is and was able to drive out of the way of traffic.
I then checked the linkages under the hood and they seemed to work fine and moved when the gearstick was moved but they were very loose. After wiggling them about for a while I managed to get 1st, 2nd and third gear and before I got the chance to get into 4th or 5th the same thing happened again and I had to pull over. Luckily I was right next to a garage, so the car got towed home.
However I've no idea what could be causing this? Could it be the selector below the gearstick (if this car even has one? complete newby here) or could it be the linkage cables? or the springs? or the selector forks within the gearbox itself?
I guess it all comes down to money... does this sound like an expensive fix?
I can confirm the clutch works perfectly so it's not coming from there, although if the gearbox has to come out ill replace the clutch as well.
Any help would be appreciated, cheers guys.
