Right, I'm gonna put my neck out here. I've got a 1996 Polo just basic 1.4 auto. (Don't ask). Anyway, my 2 questions are.
1) what MK is it? (I, or II or III)
2) what would be the first modification to do to get a little oomph out of it, but not spending vasts amount of money?

it is a mk4, or 6n as it's official code is. BUT Germans sometimes refer to them as mk3s (confused yet

) as they call what we'd call a mk3 (like my car) a mk2F (for facelift).
as for "oomph", go for a nice exhaust & filter. unless you're willing to spend 1000's on it you're not going to get that engine to go fast. might as well make it sound nice & concentrate your efforts on the look of the car.

baseman
is 100% correct here...go for styling mate and make the car sound nice as 1.4 8V is not very tunable without spending more than an engine conversions worth on it

how much would a simple NOS kit for one of them be?
the torque converter in the auto box would enable you to get some very "interesting" off the line performance hehehe....

engine transplants are needed if u want big power gains.
just a performance exhaust should gain a few BHP and itll sound faster!

til you realise it amplifies the characteristic "far too smooth" rise and fall of the engine note because of the auto box
dead givaway that
