Smoker's Pack

When discussing my order for a Polo GTi with the dealer by email, I asked "In order to have a cigarette lighter socket to plug in tyre inflater etc. do I need the smokers pack?" and she replied "Yes you will need the smoker pack for the lighter". Now she says on the telephone that the Polo already has a socket to plug in my tyre inflater etc. so I do not need a Smoker's Pack. Could someone confirm this?
Also, she says that the car comes with protective mats on top of the carpet. Is this correct?

I didn't order the Smoker's Pack with my GTI a few months ago and it has a standard 12V cigarette lighter socket in the dash. It is only live when the ignition circuit is on.
When my car arrived at the dealership it had the GTI mats stored in the boot. They are black carpet with red piping and clip to the floor. I've never looked at what's underneath but I suspect it is more black carpet. I use rubber mats on top as extra protection but I've been looking to find some new ones which will grip the carpet mats better. So far without success.

Can't comment on the mats, but all polos from SE and above come with usb port, 12V socket and another port. I've got a Blue GT with these and my wifes SE has them also.

Maybe I've said this before, if so sorry, but, my last two VWs came with carpet mats as standard, when I got them I just bought VW rubber mats and placed them on top of the carpet mats - for the life of both cars, this meant that when I sold them both had "as new" carpet mats and main carpets cut where the extra rubber mates were being pushing into them. This time round, my S4 came secondhand with one mat missing so I asked dealer to fit rubber mats, when I ordered wife's new Polo I did not spec carpet mats but before pick-up asked dealer to fit rubber mats. Really, in my mind, that is the only way to go - stick to a single mat at all times, and in your case maybe that means using the carpet mats in summer and rubber mats in winter. For those still needing carpet mats all year round but wanting to "save" their "good" carpet mats, nip along to your local VW dealer's parts department and buy a set of "Polo 2009 >" mats for £50 instead of £80?

The rubber mats I'm using are smaller than the carpet mats in all dimensions and they don't have any fixings so present a flat surface underneath. They do give useful protection against wear on the carpet mats eg by shoe heels and they are instantly removable for cleaning. I can't see how how these could damage either the carpet mats or any carpet underneath the carpet mats which is what I take your post to imply. Could you clarify this? Thanks

The problem on our previous VW cars was that, well at least the front carpet mats are fixed by the plastic retainer, when you place the correct shaped rubber mat on top of that carpet mat, there is nothing to locate the rubber mat and it tries and does move, that movement, in the case of wife's Polo meant that the rubber mats moved forward and under the pedals and so limited the downward movement of the pedals, it did not bother her, but it annoyed/concerned me as I needed to grab the rubber mat and pull it back each time I drove her car. The damage to the main carpet on the Passat, now that I think about it was probably due entirely to VW not making rubber mats available for RHD 4Motion cars, no one ever said that, it was just obvious when I fitted them in to the car, though I thought wrong rubber mats were better than no rubber mats in winter time. Either way, the driver's side rubber mat was moving slightly across the top of the carpet mat and that caused it to dig into the carpet leaving an ugly white(?) slot in it.

Thanks for the advice.
She now says that they will provide protective velour mats on top of the carpets, free of charge

If your GTI is like mine, those velour mats will come from the factory stashed in the boot along with the manuals, service book etc.
