Hello, i currently own a polo 6R DSG on 40k miles, i recently got a new job and i am now doing 60+ miles a day and i am worried that will kill the car faster, as it is such a small engine running at a high power!
i do really really enjoy driving the polo! but i rather take a lost now as the value will drop loads because of the miles i do every day! i dont know is it a good idea getting rid of it now or it will start to have problems, what do you guys think?

im currently looking at a mk6 GTD as the mk7 is too expensive! ( love them!) on paper the GTD only do around 51 mpg compare to the polo 47mpg? would i notice a big different in fuel prices? would i save money ? are the mk6 GTD engine reliable and would they last longer then the polo?

thanks for the advise guys!

I've borrowed a GTD several times when my BlueGT kept going in to be repaired. Even driving it carefully I struggled to get more than 54mpg but I easily got 65mpg in the standard 2.0L diesel golf. I'd see if you could borrow one for 24 hours from a VW dealer and take it on your standard route to work and back to see what can be achieved.

Ambient temperature seems to be a big influencing factor on a diesel-engined car's fuel consumption. I currently have a mk6 Golf GTD (picking up my Polo GTI on 1st March!) and in 'normal' A-road driving, just going with the flow of the traffic, I usually see upper 50's in the summer months - sometimes low 60's - but this drops to low 50's in the winter on the same journeys. Not all of this will be down to summer / winter weather; increased use of 'electricals' such as lights, heated rear window etc in the winter may also have an impact. I'd say that overall, I probably see around 53-54 mpg.

I believe the oil companies also change the formulation of diesel fuel for winter use, and winter diesel is less efficient than normal diesel, so this contributes to the lower mpg in the winter.

My GTD has been a great car; I've owned it from new for just over 4.5 years - the longest I've ever kept a car, and I still enjoy driving it. Only really changing it as I fancy something different. It's been utterly reliable, has never let me down. Apart from replacing faulty rear shock absorbers (under warranty), the only costs have been servicing and fuel.

Thank you! I really don't want to get rid of my polo, it been such a great car, the only thing can match it is a GTD In my option! I get the speed and mpg on it, it's just a shame that I'm worried about the little engine :(

Thanks! I have seen them on high millage, but do you reckon the car be safe after 100k? The dsg, the super charger and the turbo going still be going ? It's hard to say I can't afford the repair bills so not sure what to do!

I can understand your concern have you considered a proper extended warranty from VW

Personal, I can understand the OP's concerns without trying to make out that the Polo GTI is only good for short journeys for a few years.
I'd think that if it is still able to make "good" money for you, get rid of it due to your changed circumstances and buy a used Golf, it will have lost a lump of its money and should still be able to either last longer under that usage, or still hold "enough" of its value when it is time to sell it with a biggish mileage.

I have an Audi S4, I keep that car for high days and holidays, if I, like some other owners, used that car every day as a workhouse, its resale value would be absolutely minimal. Some S4's are owned by professionals, vets, doc, etc and they can carry that loss through usage, so they end up on sale with huge mileages form dodgy garages at a "good/low" price after being disposed of after trade in.

That is what counts, for a car to get resold by a main dealer, it needs to be clean and lowish mileage - anyone running a performance car and loading lots of miles on it - then expecting a chunk of money back, has lost the place - it just can not work like that.

Alternative plan, if funds allow, keep Polo GTI for high days and holidays, put the miles on a cheaper Golf and run it into the ground.
