Polo 1.2 TSI - Some thoughts and questions

Hi everyone! About 6-7 months ago I purchased my first car, a lovely VW Polo 2013 TSI. Ever since I have excitedly been reading up on the internet about different ways to improve the different functionalities of the car, especially here on this forum!

The first thing I did during my research before the purchase was to make sure that it had Bluetooth. With the help of threads here I ordered home an adapter from eBay that made it possible for the phone to connect to the car to play music wirelessly. I feel sorry for the couple I bought the car from who were sad that they never had Bluetooth installed, turns out they had the whole Bluetooth phone system setup and were only lacking the little adapter!

I have slowly been looking into adding some new things to it and I have some questions that I'd appreciate to shed some light on.

Question 1
I have been interested in installing a nice RCD/RNS 510, and due to the priceyness of the RNS, I opted for an RCD 510.
I got a nice price for it (225 EUR) and you can see below that it was manufactured last year. My question however is this. The seller removed this radio from a Norwegian car in order to install a navigation system, it says that Delphi manufactured it, and it was manufactured in Portugal. Wasn't Delphi the manufacturer of Chinese units, that state Made in China and only for Chinese cars?

Image
This is the label on the RCD 510 that I have ordered.

Question 2
My car is rather basic in regards to the headlight switch, and I have ordered this item in order to add the light sensor functionality to it:

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/VW-Auto- ... 27137.html

What struck me was that the current original light switch that I have only has the fog light symbol for the rear fog light, even though I think I have fog lights installed in the front. Would this mean that by installing this new light switch, I may be able to use them? I'm thinking that the lights were factory installed, and all I need is the right switch for the magic to happen as the wiring is already done.

Image
My car, with the unusable fog lights. Don't mind the hideous covers on the seats, they were burned shortly after :)

The current original light switch with only the rear fog light symbol

Question 3
I'm aware that the RCD 510 has no media-in port, which is completely fine by me. What I would love to have however is a dedicated USB port next to the AUX port in order to only charge phones. Is that possible to do somehow without advanced skills? Is there a USB port out there that would match the style of the AUX port in the picture?

Image
Is it possible to use that empty slot for a charge only USB port?

Question 4
I have read everywhere that the little joystick control for the side mirrors feels very fragile, and I agree. In an attempt to turn on the mirror heating something cracked, and now the red LED light under the control is no longer working, which is very annoying! Is there a quick fix to this or would I have to change the whole thing?

I appreciate any help and advice that you can give me, this is a great forum, and I thought I'd finally take the next step and say hello. Looking forward to hear your thoughts!

Well, here we go

Question 1:
no clue

Question 2:
those are not your fog lights but your daytime running lights.
you can switch the light switch, but i think you need to do some wiring. dependent on your BCM, you can either wire them as fog lights with cornering lights OR just fog lights.

Question 3:
yes of course. you need a 12V to 5V converter and hook it up to a USB port. the OEM USB port is 6C0 035 249 B S

Question 4:
I would simply change the whole thing, they are not that expensive anymore and fixing is no succes guaranteed.

Hey iichel, thank you for your reply!

Q2 - I see. What is odd is that they are not functioning at all right now, obviously not as fog or cornering lights, but neither as DRL.
I've added some images of the switch and the front lights trying to see if the DRL comes on, bottom being with the full beam on. Could maybe be a cause of fused bulbs..

Q3 - Thank you so much for this - been scouring the internet for this piece! Now I need to find it for sale somewhere. Would you please recommend a guide on how to put this together?

Q4 - Yeah, this is what I'll do, I don't understand however how to take out the original switch, and I haven't been able to find a guide for it. Once again, any recommendation on where to figure it out? :)

Thank you so much!

Try it in the 0 position, then they will come on in the bumper.
And if you put the switch in the fog light position,a light at the back will light up.

For the switch for the mirrors, simply remove the cover of the door handle.
For removing the light switch, set to 0 position, press towards the engine side, turn to clockwise until it's in the 12 o clock position and then pull out.

DRL works! Haha feeling a bit silly.

I understand how to remove the light switch and looking forward to doing the change as soon as the new switch is delivered. The mirror switch has been ordered. Still av bit uncertain on how to remove the door handle cover, but I'll ask for some guidance when it is delivered.

Now what remains is finding that OEM USB-port and figuring out how to connect it. Would you please be able to recommend a converter that I should order home? Thank you for all the help and info iichel, much appreciated.

Does anyone have an idea about the RCD510 question? If not then I hope that it'll work out. My guess is that Delphi has taken over the manufacturing in Portugal as well, seeing as the unit is relatively new and was installed in a European car.

You can buy OEM VW USB slot and USB car charger (AliExpress) with Quick Charge. I am in the process of preparing the car charger for my Polo: https://www.dropbox.com/s/jmpma4j6y7x98 ... 6.jpg?dl=0 ;-)

Thats interesting! And then you just switch out the internal parts of the OEM VW USB slot to the USB charger from AliExpress to give it the OEM look, correct?

That is precisely what I will be doing :)

I just found the USB port with the part no. 6C0035726, ordering that one home. Would you mind showing how you'll be installing this in your car as well? I learn rather quick when I have something to follow, unfortunately I haven't found many guides on charge-only USB ports online.

There is a lot of models USB Slot from Polo 6C in ETKA: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LGE ... sp=sharing

I bought 6C0 035 726 C, because it is cheapest :P (50 PLN)

No problem with guide, but firstly I need to retrofit RVC in my Polo :)
I think, you can connect this to 12V socket wires.

Sounds great! Looking forward to it :)

Good luck with the RVC!

Hey guys,

So I've kind of not been liking the idea of opening up the USB-port and switching out the interiors - so I started to look for different options and found something that looks interesting. What do you think? I am by no means an expert on this, been reading up on other people's installations and thought that maybe this would make for a neat installation (if the parts below are even right!)

Forgot to explain my thinking last night!

The idea is to connect the USB port to the USB-to-4 pin VW cable, connect the USB male to the converter's USB female, which then goes to the fuse box, piggy backing on the cigarette chargers fuse spot. If I found the right info, it should be fuse no. 42 in the fuse box.

Does anyone know if this would work?
