Hi, I recently bought a used Polo 1.4 16v and it doesn't have it's original engine cover (ordered a new one) and I discovered this hose under the hood after having it fully serviced. Can anyone tell me what it's for and where it connects to? Tried connecting to engine cover but the internal diameters too thin (ordered a new one). On a side note, the cars mpg seems to be very poor even after servicing, around 80 miles has taken it to half a tank, that's driving around town and up hills and is probably in part to me overrevving (not used to a petrol) but i'm unsure whether it has anything to do with that hose. I've attached a picture to show you what i'm referring to. Thanks for any help.

Hi, I found out that it's for the air filter, so it connects to the engine cover. Does it affect fuel economy? Because my fuel economy seems to be terrible even after servicing.

Thatll be the breather for the crankcase for oil pressure

It wouldnt normally affect your economy

Engine oil, filters, spark plugs, battery, tyres, brakes, exhaust, lights, suspensions, tightened handbrake, new gearbox was also fitted recently and ran fuel injector cleaner through the car. Needs a bit of work still, replacing the wiper linkage and motors tomorrow as the front wipers don't seem to be working properly and washer leaks into the passenger side under the glove box when sprayed, leaving a damp smell in the car, supposedly a common problem on this model. Also, the coolant light came on, so I topped that up above max but it seems to have dropped to mid way between max and low, so I'm unsure if there's a leak. Not sure if the fuel economy I'm getting is normal for this car or there's a leak or something somewhere or if it's because I've been filling up with supermarket fuel lol.

How many miles are you getting to a tank?

Did they change the fuel filter?

Yes, fuel filter was changed. Around 80 miles has taken tank from full to half, around 30 of those were on motorway and the others in town, stop start driving on hills in traffic as well. I do still have a tendency to over-rev moving off as I'm not used to the sensitivity of the gas pedal in petrols.

Was it filled till it clicked? You shoud see a good 150 miles between full and half at least

Yes lol. Was just over 40 litres full. Definitely running a lot smoother after service and gearbox though, even the cambelt was only recently changed and tires pumped to recommended pressure and mileage is at around only 68000 on the clock. Should I take it to a garage and see if they can find out why the fuel economy is s**t?

It could be due to a faulty lambda sensor causing it to over fuel. The exhaust fumes would normally smell quite rich it so

Might be worth getting it checked over

I've got a 9n3 gti (1.8t) and I get 300 miles to a full tank (cost £40 to fill up) depending on how I drive

Seems like yours is defiantly using to much fuel

Hmm, well I'm gonna fit the air filter back up this weekend with the right hose this weekend and see how many miles I can get on the rest of the tank, I haven't noticed any smell of petrol except for when tanks full nor seen any leaking fuel, done around 95 miles and it's sat at around half a tank. The previous owner clearly didn't maintain it well, if at all, even the coolant warning light came on a week after I bought the car and has dropped slightly after topping it up over max. I'll update this thread as I carry out repairs if I notice any improvements.

Coolant gone down already? Have you looked and checked the oil cap to see if their is a creamy substance? If so could be a head gasket problem shouldnt really drain coolant that quick

I recently took the car to garage and they fixed the coolant issue, said there was just an air lock in the system which they released, glad it wasn't a bigger issue. Fuel issue still persists which couldn't be fixed at that garage. Taking it to a tuning specialist garage the coming week to see if they can find the issue.

Wiper linkage and motors been changed so the wipers work fine now, leak under glove box from windscreen washer is from the flimsy corrugated windscreen washer pipe having splits in it, so waiting for that part to arrive so that I can have it replaced.

Found out the cause of the poor fuel consumption and gears sometimes not locking into first/reverse. Slipping clutch. I thought the slow acceleration/overrevving was just because the car was slow and that all petrol VW's had high biting points lol.
