Weird Clutch Clunk

Hello all,

Strange problem when depressing and lifting the clutch pedal when the car is in neutral. Lets off a single "clunk" from what appears to be the engine bay area. On Monday when I first noticed it happening it also clunked when moving off from first but hasn't done it since. Seems to be more noticeable on very warm days but also does it in the cold. Also in the hot weather the clutch pedal's travel feels very odd. The best way to describe it is as if there was extra resistance than normal.

Couldn't make a video of it myself but I found something similar (albeit on a Subaru):

Gear changes are spot on, no clutch slipping and the bite point feels normal. Any ideas what this could be? Thinking a trip to my dealership is in order...

Clutch pedal mechanism, master cylinder and mechanism, slave cylinder and mechanism does seem to have become a big problem across the VAG marques, looks like someone with an economics qualification has played their part in forcing the redesign of a part that had been perfected over a number of years - probably to generate more income for workshops?

Could be an issue with the release bearing not returning properly. Id say its a trip to the dealership, but try do it on a day when it is doing it as they are renowned to fob you off

Thanks Alex.

Had some real difficulty getting into first gear whilst driving about today. All other gear changes are OK it seems.

Really worried VW are going to say it's not covered by warranty. I've had the car for less than 1000 miles. I don't drive like an idiot as well when it comes to the clutch as I know how expensive they can be to fix.

It's still under the official 3 year warranty so pretty much everything apart from deliberate abuse is covered within reason. You've got nothing to lose

Your diagnosis was absolutely spot on Alex! It was the release bearing.

VW are replacing the clutch kit and flywheel for me under warranty later this week/early next week :)
