2016 Match suspension

I recently bought a Polo Match 1.2 90PS TSI, 5 door.
I'm pleased with it, apart from the suspension - small bumps and potholes send a hefty thump through the car, and I have to go pretty slowly over road humps or it really jars. It feels like the shock absorbers aren't doing their job! I assume the suspension is deliberately soft, but it doesn't seem to be designed to cope with the state of British roads.
Is this just me, or are they all like this?
