Hi
Would I be ok to run a 185/55 tyre on a 14x7J rim ? or is this too narrow ?.

yeah thats fine i run 195 50 15`s on my 15x7 and there slightly bulged
ps 7j is the distance between the 2 inside surfaces of the bead seats so if you confert that into mm then you can get an idea of how the tyre will sit

Just looked this old post up.

7" is aprrox 178mm, I just been out to the garage to measure up some brand new 185 Yoko's and they are approx 170mm across the beads.
So they should fit fine then.

I have my heart set on some RSL wheels :D

How about 8J's on the back ?
8" is approx 203mm I think I would be pushing it with 185's on these !.

Probably best with 7J's all round.

or some 195s on the back.

PS any pics of the wheels - not sure what the RSLs look like

You'll have mega-stretch on the rears with 185 and 8J. Don't know if will go (or if that's even safe?!) but it sounds pretty hardcore. On the other hand, the higher sidewall (185-55?) will give it some leaway.

(If that's even a word)

Some stretch for sure with 185's on 8J but I've seen it done before. Also people stretch 175/50 onto 8x13 rims.

I think will go with 7's front and back as I want to retain 14" wheels but fill the arches out a bit. The 7J's with ET26 will do that just fine, could even add a 5mm spacer to the rears if I felt like it.

Alex your English is impeccable !
There is such a word, it is infact spelt
leeway

Nearly spelt it right then eh!

But you're right on the stretching (too), it's not as extreme as I'd imagined.

Update on this

I'm now thinking of getting Revolution RFX 7x14 and possibly 7.5x14 on the back.
These are the same as Schmidt's for anyone who's not sure.

I love the RSL's but they look hard to clean with all those split rim bolts !.

I like the Schmidt's, can't really go wrong there. Allthough, I just had a thought *shocking, I know* - With 14's, you'll need to drop it pretty darn low to fill the arches up.

That Chagall Blue one is about 2,5" off the ground, judging from the front lip. That's seriously low...

I think the blue one is running around a 100mm drop.

You're right about needing a big drop with 14's, this is why I'm going to run with standard 185/55 tyres rather than the lower 195/45's to retain the correct diameter wheel.

I still think I will want it lower though
