Just bought some 17" wolfrace katana alloys that were fitted to an old polo. Haven't tried fitting them yet but I know that the polos centre is 57.1 and when I've measured the alloys I bought they're around 56.

However I got out my spare wheel from the car and measured the hubs centre bore and it also says around 56mm. Is it possible to do anything if the centre bores too small?

Usually, if not the same size as the OEM wheels, the centre bore of aftermarket wheels is generally larger, not smaller. This is so aftermarket wheels can be used on many different manufacturer's cars with different size wheel centre bores. Where the aftermarket wheel centre bore is larger than a car's original wheels, it's necessary to fit spigot rings of the correct size to reduce the size of the centre bore, so the wheels fit tight on the car's hub and you don't experience wheel wobble or vibrations.

You've said the wheels were fitted to an old Polo. The Polo has had a wheel centre bore of 57.1 since at least the 6N model. How accurately are you measuring the centre bore and are you measuring from the front or the rear of the wheel (you should be measuring from the rear)? You've said 'around 56' for the new wheels and your existing spare. If you take one of your wheels off the car and measure the centre bore, is it also 'around 56'?

Also, "acid test" while you are going as suggested above, trial fit one of these new wheels - that beats any/all guessing about things?

The polo has had a 57.1mm center bore since at least the Mk2 in 1988!

Your spare wheel will have a 57.1mm center bore. If it measure the same as your wolf race alloys it’ll fit. I would suggest getting a new tape measure though. It sounds like it’s inaccurate.

I don't know how good your steady hand is, but about 1mm deviation is acceptable for my tape measure
