Will a set of G40 brakes fit and work correctly on a 1.3CL Coupe?

Is it just a 'straight swap', or will i need some G40 hubs aswell?

I appreciate your thoughts on this one & also if anyone is selling a G40 brake setup

Any ideas how much the calipers/pad carriers go for second hand?

Yes, like people have said you will need the brakes carriers and callipers from a golf Mk 1 gti or cabby, scirocco or G40 with the 239mm vented discs. Make sure you get the bolts for the callipers too. Basically whats in pettsy's pic there, obviously with your choice of pads and discs. I would also recomment a set of braided brake hoses.

Superb information hardhitter! :D

239mm is the magic number that i shall be looking out for (they will fit behind some 6J Pirelli P's, ET38 wont they?)

yes they'll fit. They're the same size as the discs you have now. Just vented where as yours are solid.

How do you mean good / cheap ? As in performance or standard ? The cheapest brakes usually arent the best.
I can recomment going to somewhere like GSF and getting either standard brembo or max grooved discs. Combine them with a good make of pads like pagid, ate, ferodo or ebc greenstuff.
