Fully Synthetic 5W-40 to current VW Group spec for petrol engines.
Edit:- one thing though, for petrol engine cars that spec should be 504.00 but that only seems to cover 5W-30 oils, which is weird as VW Group now only use Long Life 5W-30 on variable servicing, fixed miles/months servicing now gets 5W-40 which might or might not show as being 504.00 - I'm only suggesting 5W-40 as it might reduce the oil burning very slightly. So VW 502/505 spec'd oil will be okay.

Castrol Edge 5w - 30 Professional LongLife III. I have a top up bottle of this in my boot all the time, havent had to use it yet though. I dont know much about cars so others may suggest different, but ive seen its recommended by volkswagon

If that car is using a bit too much oil, maybe get a suitable Fuchs oil as it will be a lot cheaper than 5W-30 LL oils like Castrol Edge Prof - the Prof bit, I think, is just that it has a dye added. I mean, what does your local car parts place sell, ask them for a suitable 5W-40 that meets VW 502 spec.
Edit:- I think that Fuchs is back being VW's factory fill oil supplier, the Castrol connection has been broken.
Another Edit:- don't over think this, your car's engine is not a high demander as far as oil is concerned, just treat it with a mid quality 5W-40 that meets or exceeds VW 502. Normally these specs are quoted on the containers of oil that has passed or produced to meet these specs.

How much/often does your car need this oily stuff stuffed into it?

I've owned the car since feb
Done 10,000 miles
Got my "yearly/10,000th mile" service
Done 4,500 miles (up to yesterday) realised i was at the bottom of my dip stick for oil...
So err, twice - but with quite a few miles?!

My daughter runs a late 2009 Ibiza 1.4 currently at 41K miles with that engine and so far it does not need any oil adding between its yearly services, which is normally only 6.5K miles.
