Head Unit from Scrapyard

Hi guys,
So i went to my local scrap yard to see if they had any head units from crashed VWs ...

They have a Polo GTI with a head unit that has built in SatNav (which is what I'm after)

They said I can have it for £125 (+vat) (based on prices I've seen on ebay etc, its a steal)

My Polo 2012 has a RCD310 - so, 3 questions,
  • when im salvaging the head unit, is there anything else i need to take with it? (eg: extra antennas etc)
  • Should this unit be a direct replacement for what i currently have? (ie, take the faceplate off my car, unscrew the torx pull it out, plug in the new one, screw it in and boom, new radio?!)
  • Do i need to do any coding in VCDS, if so, what do i need to do?
I know i need a code for the new head unit, but the scrap yard is "friendly with a local vw dealer" who can get codes for it at no cost, so win win there.

Just need this cleared up before i spend any money on it :)

Yes straight swap providing it’s an RNS510 or similar series and not the newer 6C type. All you need is a GPS antenna which you can get from ebay

What year is the gti that you are getting the headunit from? Because post 2014 cars have composition media which don’t work with rcd310 etc.

I'm not sure yet, im getting more details on Monday!

So basically if its 2015 or newer, the head unit wont work?

2014 onwards turned into 6C which has composition media which is incompatible with cars from 09-14

If you want sat nav, you’ll want an RNS315 or RNS510, not an RCD unit; the RCD units don’t have sat nav.

Look up Alex Retrofit on facebook, he’s a dedicated VAG retrofitter and sells RNS310 and RNS510 w/ bluetooth modules for market value and can fit them if you’re near him. Bought a RNS310 from him on monday for £320 posted.
