Manual gear shift cable replacement question

Hi,
One of the cables in my car are visibly breaking. I am no longer able to engage 2nd and 4th gears.
Should I simply get new gear shift cables, or the entire unit of the shift mechanism and the cables?
My car has done about 125,000 kms, and is 7 years old.
