Polo Blue GT low fuel economy and ticking brakes

Picked up a 2015 Blue GT a week Wednesday. Lovely car - such a massive step up from my 2003 Clio!

I do have one issue - I seem to only be averaging 32mpg. My "short journey" mpg is often worse with tonights 3 mile drive home being 28mpg. Initially I'd put it down to new car, more power and a heavy foot. Over the past couple days I've been as gentle as possible - usually following the gear change indicator on the dash. Still not much of an improvement. Is this normal or should I be getting more than 300 miles out of a tank? Others on here seem to be quoting low 40s for town driving.

One other thing I've noticed is my brakes ticking as if they are cooling down - even after my short 3 mile drive home. Could I be looking at a calliper stuck on?

Hi Smaahm,

I’ve owned my Blue GT 14 plate from new and I must say that my average mpg is around 28 as I only do 19 miles to work which consists of a short motorway jaunt then 30mph roads. Also I don’t always drive for max mpg.

Although I can drive from Manchester to The Norfolk Broads and back on a single tank doing the speed limit and cruise control and mine is the DSG model.

As for the ticking brakes I have also noticed this but mainly if I have been braking more/heavier than usual i.e traffic or spirited driving  and this is normal as they are just cooling down.

Hopefully this helps.

I have a 63 plate bluegt that ive owned for 8-10 months cant remember when i got it but its around then. my journey to work is only just over 3 miles and I do get low 40's when the weather is mild, on cold days and mornings it will normally be in the 30's. on an hours drive to the coast ive had upto 55 which is what i used to get in my old 2012 1.4 polo. so im not really getting much difference compared to my old polo.
cold weather i also find my cylinder deactivation takes a little longer to kick in so the bad mpg is probably down to that. I also get the ticking brakes after a journey which i believe is normal as other owners have noticed that too. I always fill my tank back to full when i get down to quarter full and i normally get 300 miles off it so not sure what using a full tank would get me, my old polo was the same.
