I've got a 3 door 1999 T Polo and after the recent rain we've had I found that the drivers side front and rear footwells are soaking in water (especially in the back).

I've looked at the door seal and it seems to be fine, there is no dampness around the door and the water seems only in the centre of the footwell and over toward the centre of the car near to the drive shaft (I assume caused by the camber of the road when it was parked).

I have heard that some VW's can get a drain(?) by the pollen filter clogged up which may cause the problem but I have not heard of this in Polos (and don't really know where this is).

Does anyone know of what might cause this as I don't really want the VW dealer to charge me a fortune and say they can't find the cause.

Water leaks are somewhat common on Mk4's, unfortunately.

Common culprits are the faulty door rubbers, clogged up raintrays as you mentioned, and even sunroofs or windshields that aren't fitted properly.

The place to look for the interior air filter is underneath that black plastic right under the windshield wipers, on the exterior of the car. The plastic cover is simply clipped in place, but take care removing it or you'll likely break the clips.

Also check the seal on the rear light clusters as this used to allow lots of water into the back of mine and sometimes would make its way to the front aswell.
If not try talcon powder to find the culprit it can be a bit messy but will show where the leak is coming from.
or get an umberlla big enough for your car saw one on a japanese site once
