Hi

Ive had the car around 3 months, when we first used the windscreen wash it smelt of (rotten eggs)

I used up the was gradually and replaced with fresh water and windscreen wash, this seemed ok for a while but not eh smell is happening again when using the spray.

Anyone else had this - car is only 1 year old.

Thanks

There have been reports about across the board and not just VW Group cars. It seems like people have been mixing differing types of washer concentrate which either causes this or makes it a lot nastier.

To sort this out, either you need to add something into the fluid tank to kill this and flush the system, or hand it into a dealer for them to remove the tank and make sure it gets cleaned out or replaced at your cost.

Try searching on the internet for suggestions based on experience, which luckily I don't have.

Edit:- I have only used the original tank full of VW Group concentrate followed up with either Holts concentrate or later Prestone concentrate on all my VW Group cars over the past 18 years.

The cheap screen wash from Halfords is pretty rubbish. If you leave it ready mixed after a couple of months you can literally see algae growing in it, so I guess all products are not created equal. The genuine VW stuff is OK but a bit on the expensive side. I've switched to using "Prestone" concentrate and it's been pretty good up to yet and smells quite nice.

Ive always used Carplan 4 seasons without a problem.

The Smell was there when we bought the car so its nothing I've put in - Ill hand it to VW as its was an issue from when we bought it

Thanks

I'd think that you'd be very lucky if VW sort this out FOC, okay you say it was an issue with the car when you first owned it, but unfortunately it was the time to get it sorted FOC.

Following on from wolfie's comment about algae, I was trying to sort out some stuff in the garage this morning and I came across an unopened container of Ford washer conc, which must have been given to me about 20 years ago - and even then, there was a comment on the rear of that container outlining the fact that this stuff was "wildlife safe" as it had been made from organic sources - so I'd guess that stuff might also get nasty when mixed with water and left in a washer fluid tank - maybe it will be gifted to a friend who does not spend much on window washing conc!

Edit:- it would be a 1971 SAAB 96 it would end up in, so just a little experiment on my part! (he has spent a lot of time paying the price of leaving petrol in the tank while the car has been out of use over most of the past 10 years, so he knows how to clean out a tank)
