Steering light came on, local garage did test the following problems came up 00566 - Steering assistance operation not a plausible signal - intermittent
And
01288 - terminal 30 steering assist too low - intermittent
Garage was unable to fit me in so went to another mechanic, they replaced the power steering pump today but said the light would not go off but is driving fine so check with VW as electrics might need resetting.

I drove the car home and steering still feels heavy when turning but not as bad as before pump replacement.

Is this common after a new pump?! I don’t know what to do next....

I would return to the mechanic that fixed it in the first place.
If you'll end up going to another garage, you might lose the warranty on the first repair.

Replacing the steering pump assembly on these cars is quite an expensive job, if I was running a garage and that car was driven in for repair and I did not have all the equipment to fully fault find it and if necessary re-code the replacement pump assembly correctly - and clear the logged faults, I would have suggested taking that car to a proper garage.

I am assuming that the first garage had all the correct diagnostic kit and suggested that a new steering pump assembly was required - as far as they could make out, you then took this diagnostic information to the next garage who don't seem to have been able to carry out their own diagnostic checks - or you just asked them to replace the pump, which was it?

Depending on what actually happened, you should then either return it as suggested above, or if you directed what work that garage did to your car, take the money hit and get it booked into a garage that can handle these cars.

Edit:- remember that some garages only have basic engine systems diagnostic tools, using one with VW Group fully compliant diagnostic tools may well have given better pointers to what the root cause of that problem was.
