Buying 2014 6C 1.2 SE - Questions to ask dealer

Hi,
Have spent a good hour scrolling through this board looking for posts relating to potential issues with this car, and am happy to say I haven't found any, except for the lack of car app net connect or whatever it's called. No biggie. This one's got the satnav extra.

I'm looking for advice on what I should be checking with the dealer (VW garage, daswelt). I think one worry I have is the ambiguity over whether my model has a timing chain or belt, and whether I need to try and get them to agree to replace it. The car was first registered Sept 2014 so it is coming up to 4 years, but I can't figure out if my model (definitely 6C) is chain or belt. It's got about ~29k miles on the clock.

Any other things to ask about? Car has full VW service history.

Appreciate any advice as am new to both Polos and buying cars in general (this is only my second and a fair upgrade on my original!)

6C has a timing belt.
I'm not aware of any systematic issues with these cars to be honest. I read about some faults in the software of the control modules but these mostly occur when three car is in its first year. It was when solved within warranty.
Otherwise just make a test drive. Turn off the radio on bumpy roads and listen for squeaks and rattles.

Thanks! I actually shushed my other half whilst driving, and made us all sweat by turning off the air con which was noisy as needs regassing. Maybe I've read enough about buying used cars to pick up the essentials.

Does anyone know what the recommended service interval for the belt is? I bet I'm not going to persuade them to chuck it in for free.

get your mileage converter out, my software only does mainland kilometres.
So check belt first after 240.000km and then every 30.000km. I gues that would be around 160.000 miles and then every 20.000 miles.

Wow, that's a lot of miles!! It'll take me roughly 40 years to reach 240000km (150000 miles) at my current yearly mileage!

Half kidding. I had my last car for 6 years, and it was already 9 years old when I got it. I drove it til it was no longer cost effective to weld it back together. Actually, probably a bit longer than that because of the emotional attachment.

This time I've gone for something less than 4 years old. If I can keep it going for another 11 years, it'll be a reasonable investment. Plus, you know... Cars are fun and I've wanted a Polo forever!! And who knows, maybe I'll pop out a kid and suddenly have to drive everywhere. I expect it's difficult to attach a baby to my electric bike which is my normal method for getting about town 😂

I'm Dutch and I can pretty much guarantee you, we do this. A lot. No helmets either.

Lol 😂 Too late now, I bought the thing. Couldn't wait any longer.

Off topic: I saw your post on your mods, your car looks lovely! I won't be brave enough to do anything like that.

On the subject of when the cam belt is due to get replaced, I think that you should ask your salesman about that. My wife runs an August 2015 Polo 1.2TSI SEL and I've always wondered what the real proper correct pan European guidance on this is. There will be a maximum mileage advised I'd hope and for people that do not run many miles per year there should also be a maximum age between belt changes.

I have a funny feeling that if I asked that question in the service department of the main dealership that my wife bought her car from new and who still service it, I would be told the generic 5 years or 60/65K miles - I hope that I'm wrong there, but I don't want to end up with a newish car having cam drive issues - with the older 1.4 16V engine, I think that the belt change time is 5 years or ??K miles (my daughter runs a late 2009 Ibiza 1.4 16V 86PS SC, I got that car's belt changed when it was just a couple of months under 5 years old, and would plan to get her to repeat that activity this summer. Typically with a car that has a dry running fibre/rubber cam belt, it tends to be some other element in the drive train that fails and causes the belt to break etc, I'd never want that to happen just due to trying to save a few hundred pounds cash. I'm not sure how many cars would get away with checking the belt for degradation every few years, also as yet I have not worked out what else should get replaced when the belt is replaced, obviously changing the water pump makes sense and that should mean getting replacement coolant put into that car - and so on and on it goes and the cost rises, but maybe the engine is saved?

Oh I know that you are just kidding, if I managed 4000 miles a year in my Audi S4 I'd be a lot happier - so far it looks more like 2500 miles a year, gulp!!

Thanks for this comprehensive answer! I've actually managed to find (and subsequently lose again) info on the VW site that says cars before 2009 should be every 4 years, and after 2009 every 5 years, so I have have it and the water pump done this time next year as I plan to keep the car until it or I die an unexpected death.

I live in a lovely (sarcasm) town called Stevenage which has mostly segregated cycle lanes. It's an absolute pleasure to cycle here, apart from the hills, although with the electric bike I bought a few weeks ago, no chore is done in my car if I can avoid it.

Sadly I have family and friends scattered across the country, and a cat who, for some reason, won't take to the bike's basket, so there is always a reason to keep a car.

And I'll be inventing more reasons once I get my hands on my Polo!
