Hey guys
Ive had my auto electrician plug into my Polo as the engine management light keeps coming on and he tells me that the Lambda sensor needs replacing.
I reckon this is something I can do myself with just limited car mechanic knowledge, but I see that you can buy a universal one on eBay WITHOUT the plug for £18

Obviously I dont want to have to pay the higher price if necessary, so does anyone know if its really necessary to buy the one with the plug end, or can the plug just be removed from the one thats on the car currently and put on the cheaper one?

Well first of all, are you sure you're looking at the correct part number?
Does your car have just one lambda probe or two? Some have two, one before the catalytic converter and one after.

The one without the plug obviously requires soldering the wires to it. Can you do that?
Do you have any indication of the quality of it?

Personally, I'd buy the more expensive one from a good brand (Denso, Bosch, NGK, etc). This way you can be pretty sure the quality is decent.
It's a bit more painful in the wallet but can save you from future troubles (i.e. molten catalytic converter, random errors).

Where would I find what the official part number is please?

Ive not actually been under the car, I'm just going off what my A.E. told me whose been in the business for 40+ years.

Depending on the fault code, you'd probably see either bank 1 sensor 1 or bank 1 sensor 2. Sensor 1 would be before the cat, sensor 2 behind.
You can find the replacement part number in ETKA:

Number 1 is before the cat, number 2 is after.

You'll have to look for engine code CBZB or CBZB (1.2 TSI resp 90 or 105 hp).

Once you have found out which Lambda sensor it is, probably B1 S1, but you need to see which one is being logged as faulty, the quick and cheapest way to fix it is by doing what iichel suggested.

NTK used to be the brand that VW Group used, if still true then buy one of them, NTK is the NGK brand for these items, I found that my VW dealer could supply one to me for the same price or slightly less than buying online when the delivery charges are added on - that was from experience going back maybe 10 years.

and it even states my VIN number isnt correct even though I have entered it twice correctly now

You need the 03F906262C (sensor after cat).

I don't understand why using the VIN does not seem to work for us in UK - it does not make much sense, when I needed top buy one for a 2002 Polo, the part selector on the NGK site did not work when inputting the car model, age and engine type! I knew it was wrong so looked for the same item in a 2003 SEAT Ibiza and that worked, though in the end I checked the price at my VW dealership and it was just as cheap or cheaper buying it there, so I did.
Maybe once you have found an online price of one delivered to your door, phone up your local VW/SEAT/Skoda dealership parts department for their price to supply you.

You would need to tell us your engine code, the previous poster's car was an earlier engine - your profile shows your car as being a 6C version with a 1.2TSI engine - but which one or engine code.
