Is the DSG gearbox on the 1.8GTI more reliable these days?
heard some bad things about it a few years ago.

It's the same box as the 1.4 twin charger gti.

They have tried to limit the torque to help but it seems to of not helped that much.

Exactly, the GTI 6C (1.8 TSI) with manual has a maximum torque of 320Nm while the DSG version has only 250Nm (same as the DSG-only 1.4 TSI from before the facelift). As models usually have the same torque spec regardless of manual/DSG, it is remarkable (and not in a good way) that they had to make such a significant limitation in torque for the DSG version of the GTI 1.8 TSI.

my car has just been picked up by AA due to a gearbox issue.
warning light came on saying gearbox in emergency mode.
the car starts off in 2nd gear, skips 3rd, 5th and 7th gear.
the fault code it threw was P0868 - Trans fluid pressure low.
there are no leaks under my car so the transmission is not leaking

more than likely the mechatronics has failed or the one clutch for the odd gears
