We are getting an advisory message on the MFD "inspection in 12 days". Car has done 29,000mls
Can anybody explain what this inspection involves ?

It’s telling you your car is due for a service.

If you’re on the time and distance service regime, services alternate between a minor (oil) service and major (inspection) service. Details of what’s involved for each - taken from VW website under ‘Service Plans’; for cars over 1 year old.

Oil service;

• Oil & filter change, replace pollen filter (if required)

• Vehicle inspection and report to include all lights, instruments, bodywork, glass, locks, battery, coolant levels, drive belts, braking system, steering, hoses, drive shafts and exhaust system

• Full vehicle road test

• Diagnostic check including report

• Re-set service interval display

Inspection service

• Oil & oil filter change

• Replace pollen filter, replace air filter (if required)

• Spark plugs (petrol engine) or fuel filter (diesel engine) - if required

• Remove wheels and check brakes

• Check/adjust tension of all drive belts

• Check gearbox oil level

• Check final drive oil level

• Vehicle inspection and report to include all lights, instruments, bodywork, glass, locks, battery coolant levels, drive belts, braking system, steering, hoses, drive shafts suspension and exhaust system

• Full vehicle road test

• Diagnostic check including report

• Re-set service interval display

If you’re on the flexible service regime, as the car may go 18,000 miles or two years between services, I’m assuming VW would carry out the equivalent of the major (inspection) service above at each service, rather than alternate between a minor and major service.

Thanks for the very informative response. So looking closer at the service book the car is on time & distance plan and had an oil change service 30/07/18 @ 28,600mls so actually only about 500mls ago. The last extended inspection was @ 25,000mls in Oct 2017. The service book also says the next inspection service is due October 2018 @ 35,000mls and oil service @ 39,000mls in July 2019

From the dates you have listed, I think that the garage at the last service forgot to reset the service interval in July 2018 and the car is 'remembering' the service complete in Oct 2017.
