Hi there, my car is 2013 mk5 6r 1.4 polo.

Yesterday I had a problem in turning off the car. Yes, is turning off, not turning on.

For an unknown reason, after I drove back the car to car park, I turn the car key to off position and pull it out of the key switch, but my engine just won’t stop, as well as the low beam and front and back fog light. I can’t lock the lock nor turning it off no matter how hard I try to plug in and out and on and off of the key switch.

When I try to shift the car gear to D or R without a key in the key switch, the car did shift gear and move. However, I noted that air con did turn off properly.

Finally, I drove the car to a car workshop which is not specialized in VW car, they have no clue as well even calling some of the other car workshop, at last, they unplug the fuse of the engine and the engine finally stop. However, the low beam and fog light still on even those I have switch off the car in the light switch. To avoid draining out the battery, we finally unplug the battery connection.

After reconnect the battery and the fuse of the engine, the car seem working normally, having said that, to avoid some of the unknown problem of the car, i drove back to VW dealership workshop for factory inspection.

Any folks here experience that before or have some idea of what may possible cause this situation. I am wondering if it’s something related to ecu or the ecu relay.

That sounds a bit nasty!

Obviously it is not the ignition switch but a fault elsewhere that is allowing "ignition controlled" power users to get supplied via another path, though a critical relay "holding in" due to it or another fault causing it to hold in would provide that path. BCM must become a suspect?

I'd think that a proper VW dealer or a proper "car electrics" workshop would eventually find out what was and can again happen to cause this, their only trouble being will they be lucky enough to find the car getting into state so that they can investigate further - good luck!

Thanks for the reply and I was thinking would it be a software bug(s) instead of hardware failure somewhere else.

The main reason is my symptoms pin point to a hang in system which keep some of the parts of the car keep running. Also, after discount the battery, everything seem back to normal without any problem. If the problem is related to hardware, it shouldn't just back to normal so quickly without cooling down the car.

Today, I received a follow up car from VW dealer, hope they can help to find out what is the real problem. I just hope that it's a software bug and can be solved by firmware update. God bless.

Today I receive a call from VW dealer and they replied me that the problem was due to key switch, hah!?

Anyway, this is what they said, after some google research, i guess the part is call IGNITION STARTER SWITCH and it cost me around 100 pounds to replace it.

Hope this can fix the problem.
