Hi Guys,

Can anyone help me locate the MAP sensor for my 2010 1.2 Polo (CGP engine).. I’ve uploaded a pic of the engine bay if that helps.

I’m trying to fix a “system too lean (bank 1)” by cleaning the MAP first.

Yup, that will be it, just take care when spraying it with carb cleaner as you should not spray it into it directly under high pressure. Try to cover that sensor end with something that can hold a volume of cleaner then shake it to try to clean it, repeat with fresh cleaner 5 or 6 times seems to be the general advice.

Edit:- have you checked as to what typically causes the engine to think that the mixture is too lean or causing it to under fuel the engine. Ignore the "bank 1" description as your engine is a straight or inline 3 cylinder so has only one cylinder bank.

I’m not sure what the cause is. The engine seems to be running fine. There are no misfires.

Someone suggested cleaning the MAP first. Others suggested include:
- running it on the motorway for a good time with premium unleaded fuel
- spark plugs

Any thoughts from your experience?

I've forgotten now what conclusions if any I came to about that fault, my wife's 2002 Polo 9N 1.4 75PS had many small issues from new including needing a new oil separator that was allowing too much oil to be drawn into the engine and that messed up the basic mixture setting and also lowered the overall RON rating of what was being burned so caused pinking, we initially just changed to using Shell UL+ which masked these issues until I replaced the oil separator. That car also ended up with a partially choked EGR gas port at the inlet manifold entry point, really try to see what else Google suggests for this engine type, good luck.

It was yes.

The conclusion to our issue was using supermarket fuel. It seems the engine just didn’t like it.

Remember when getting a new sensor, it is a MAP not MAF sensor.
