Hey everyone

99 POLO 1.4 with 135k miles

the car recently developed this issue that when i accelerate, in fifth gear, the shifter will pop into neutral. i have no issues with the other gears. i changed the gear oil to some fresh 75w/90 last week with no improvement. i didnt see and bits of metal in the waste oil either.

has anyone else faced a similar issue?

am i looking at a new transmission/rebuild?

does anyone know if a golf 2001 uses the same gearbox?

or polo 2005?

The polos have a fairly specific gearbox. Have you tryed adjusting the linkage? What gearbox code have you got

Normally I say gearbox overhaul did it ran with enough oil in cause when it pops out without any grinding noise I say adjust but I think I ran with to less of oil to cool and and lubricate 5th gear.

And other gearboxes do fit but polo mk4 or lupo arosa best thing overhaul the original one commen problem seal that leaks where the linkage goes in the gearbox

You need the three letter code. 085 is the series but there’s a code like DXB stamped on the bottom of the gearbox which identifies it
