Hi guys - its been a while since i posted on here

So, I've posted on here before about a weird clunky noise and today i figured out what it was - its my exhaust heat shield (or the the chunk of metally stuff thats above the exhaust) its sheird off at one end!

Anyone know of a part number or how much said new chunk costs?

and how big of a job is it? would it be worth getting a garage to do it?

thanks guys.

Has this happened at the rear of the car, if so some of the retainers will have made a hole in the aluminised heat shielding material and the shield has just dropped down over them. This is caused by the fact that the retainers are steel and the shield is sort of aluminium - dissimilar metals, add in water and maybe even road salt for best effect and away they go, the aluminium loses out - gone!

To sort this cheaply, I have cut up large washers from steel exfood cans, make the washers bigger than the existing holes "dome/dish" the centre and punch a hole to allow them to pass over the retainer's fixing stud, press the retainer, or new retainer on - that is after pushing the shield back up.

Yes, remove the retainers that have "melted" through the heat shield, I'd guess that there will be at least 2 - if you destroy them, look up ebay for some " VW heat shield retainers" and buy a few, probably only available in a bag of 10, I bought some years ago for a 2002 9N Polo, still same items and same problems.

Then once you have either successfully removed the old retainers and they are still reusable, or bought new ones, cut up some old food tins to make some washers/plates large enough to allow you to push that heat, fit the new washer/plate at each fixing stud location, then either refit the old retainers or fit new retainers - job done!

Edit:- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10x-Undertra ... Sw2xRYZf~u

These should be exactly the same as those currently fitted to that car.
