2011 BlueMotion 1.2 TDI - Down on Power (?)

Hi all, I just picked up a lovely white 2011 Polo, it seems to have been well looked after, got a decent service history etc, although it is a little wounded after someone drove into it near at a McDonalds , whatever, just need to replace the bumper and realign the bonnet a bit.

My concern is that in low revs the engine is an absoulte bag of ***** some of the time, it's been a good 12+ years since I drove anything with an engine this small, but the only thing I can compare it to is the 1.8 Non Turbo Diesel Ford Escort, I had back in the dark ages.

Looking at the specs on Parkers, it has a comparible engine to the '98 1.4 Golf I had for 5+ years, but low end it just doesn't compare, pulling away it sometimes feels like I'm in 3rd not 1st, same with changing gears, I tried changing when it recommended eg. 3^ change to 4, and I'd get a noticable drop in power and speed increase until rpm was at 3k+

Is this normal? I remember Clarkson called this model absoultely gutless among other things in the race to blackpool episode

My only thought is that the check engine light has recently pinged on for P0405 (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit Low) and maybe I should hit that with a hammer?

P0405 is indeed a good reason it's down on power. Even more. Is the glow plug light blinking?

Ah excellent, I shall retrieve my hammer. No other warning lights on at all.

Looking at youtube videos the egr is in a far more inconvient location on the 1.2 than the 1.4, ehhhh, I'm guessing pull it out and give the valve a good clean is the advice going forward or have I got the wrong end of the stick entirely?

It often goes wrong without the option of saving it. The cooler either starts to leak or the valve/potentiometer will be fubar
