Yes you can sir.
You can replace the stalk on the steering column with a VW part that has the CC gubbins on it. Furthermore, you'll have to tell the car it has a new stalk, which means plugging it in to VAG COM and entering a specific code.
Some VW dealers actually do this on a regular basis, or inquire with a VW specialist. We've got independent companies doing just this, all the time - replacing stalks and fiddling with electronics to make it work. They charge about €150, or 100 UK.

My parents have CC on their Bora, I presume that if retro-fitted to a GTi it'd be the same setup as on there?

My wife's Volvo V40 (I call it her car as it's not a GTI ) has Cruise Control.
CC is excellent on those long straight runs as you can optimise speed within the speed limits and it makes the engine run at super economy (computer driven).
Her 1.8 barge gets 39.8 to the gallon using CC on a long run.
So, in a 1.6 Polo, it must take it above 40 mpg - I get 39.7 in my Polo now!

The CC works with all e-gas engines, that is engines that have an electronically controlled accelerator. This includes the GTI and all Mk5 onwards diesels AFAIK.

It can't see whats ahead and has no anticipation of road conditions or traffic volume!!!
It also constantly throttles down to maintain speed
My senator 24v on cruise at 80mph is a good 3 mpg down on what i can achieve by driving it myself at the same speed

yeh bstardchild is right.
When driving to conserve fuel you have to really plan ahead, somtimes speeding up slightly before hitting a hill so you got momentum to carry you up etc.
With cruise its trying to keep you at a set speed all the time, so your engine will work harder when it hits a hill and increase its revs instead of sacrificing speed.
However CC is nice, especially when your on a quiet motorway with a stretch of speed cameras. I drove a bmw with one and you could increase the speed by pressing a + sign on the steering wheel which was neato.

Cruise control would be nice but I would much still prefer to drive myself and not let the computer dictate my speed! (guess it would save me some points though!). That would take out the enjoying of driving! he he he!
