Fault code p0030 VW Polo 1.0 2001

Evening folks,
my engine management light has come on recently, and according to my diagnostic code reader I have the foloowing fault code P0030 ..Heater Control Circuit, Bank 1 sensor 1.
One post on the net suggested a blown fuse as the cause of this light..when I checked this fuse..true enough it was blown. The fuse in question is position 1 on the fuse box.
I have since disconnected the sensor plug and noticed that though the light stays on( obviously as it is not connected), the fuse is not blown. My question is ..can a faulty sensor cause the fuse to blow or is the fault actually in the wiring of the sensor,ie/the wiring from the sensor to the plug end,in which case do I strip the wiring to find the fault.
Or could the fault be from the other end of the plug to the ecu or where ever it goes.Is there a definitive way to check the cause of the fault?
Many thanks in advance for any input.
