Hi all,

Hope you are all well.

I Have just been given a 1999 VW Polo 1.0 Petrol Manual 5DR [6N]
I am coming to understand that the gearbox may be faulty and would need replacing... Would anyone know what the part number is or where to find one.

Kind Regards, Tom

Hi Tom

Is this a facelift 6N2 or an earlier 6N - two very different gearboxes. Also if its a 99 you are on the cusp of the change between rod and cable shift so youd need to see whats fitted

Whats the issue with the gearbox?

When traveling, when in 2nd and decelerating you hear a very loud "grinding noise" however this is only when decelerating not accelerating or traveling very slow.

Im not too sure on the exact model and i apologies for this due to my lack of knowledge with the older models.

Assumably it dissapears when you clutch down?

Clutch down actually doesn't effect the noise. only dampens it slightly

I would say thats likely a gearbox issue then from the sounds of it.

You have a 6N, likely a run out model

Can you see if you can look down the back of the engine at the gearbox? Ideally a photo underneath where the coolant bottle is looking down onto the shift mechanism will help work out which box you need.

Thats a rod shift :) Now just a case of finding one. If you look in the sticker under the boot carpet, the gearbox code is on that. Post me up a picture and ill tell you what it is

The easiest test fix would be to have the gearbox oil changed. If that doesnt fix it, then unfortunately its either a gearbox rebuild or replacement

Apologies for all the questions but what oil would you recommend or would you need to know the box code for that ?
Many Thanks,
Tom

Genuine VW gearbox oil would be my first recommendation. Itll be 75W90. Castrol SynTrans is very good, as are the Febi alternatives.
