Bluetooth, hands-free questions

Hello, we recently bought a 2nd hand Polo 2014 DSG Match for my son (age 20). The previous owner has made a number of changes, and I am asking here about the radio system.

We have the standard radio with touch screen. On the air vent above it, there is a cradle secured with Velcro, that takes a removable device with a small screen, that when plugged in shows the VW sign. Apparently that is some sort of Bluetooth. When I turn the phone on it does not see any Bluetooth devices in the car, and have tried some guides right after engine on etc. I have turned Bluetooth on in the radio settings.

There is a microphone hanging off a wire on the driver's side pillar.

On the ashtray there is a little flip cover with AUX written on it, but nothing plays through the radio when we plug it in.

On the ashtray there is a short USB cable with socket through which my son did play music, but even this has now stopped working. When I plugged my phone in this morning the radio said "device not recognised".

Could someone please tell me, is the AUX flip cover and USB cable part of the car or are they addons? Why is the Bluetooth disabled and what is that cradle and device over the radio?

Does the radio not support hands free Bluetooth without the need to add external microphone and that cradle thingy?

Many thanks
