Hi I have had my VW polo 6R polo for over a year with no issues but have recently bought and fitted an OEM steering wheel (upgraded to a leather one) I did the install last night and everything went fine and turned out well.
I then manoeuvred the car around the drive and don't remember seeing any warning lights however this morning driving to work I have noticed that the airbag warning light has come on? looking for any advice as to why this has appeared. The airbag is the same airbag that was with the car from factory I literally just took it off disconnected it ect swapped the wheel over and then put the airbag back on reversing the steps I had just taken to do the install.

Im hoping that it will just be a loose connection and that I haven't reconnected the plug properly.

If all the connectiions are fine, then maybe that it was disconnected has caused the error which needs to be programmed out on VCDS?

I just did the swap on my car and no errors whatsoever, try the steering on another car and see if it still throws the error

Hopefully the internal slip ring cable dedicated to the airbag has not been broken when you turned the steering wheel fully against the end stops due to disregarding the central position of the slip ring before installing the steering wheel.

The central position of the slip ring is with the same number of turns to the end stops for both sides of the slip ring rotation. You can count the turns for both sides if you keep in mind that the slip ring connector must be in the upper position for the central position.

In the 6R with factory ESP there is a calibration window with instructions that tells you when the slip ring is in its central position.

It's just an idea/advice.

Hi all thanks for all the suggestions and help I had a good read into everything you had mentioned on this post but took my car to a garage today after having taken the airbag back out and done some investigating myself with no luck.
The mechanic that helped me had a look at the error codes my car was throwing up and concluded that the light was caused because the airbag resistor had revived to much voltage.
He cleared the error message and the airbag light extinguished he said that the most likely cause was that I had turned on the ignition whilst the airbag was disconnected at first I was sure I hadn’t done that but thinking about it later I do remember turning the car on and re-centred the wheel before putting the airbag back on. but hopefully now the airbag should be active again and very happy to find out it wasn’t anything too serious.
