I know I have to mainly:

-swap the rear fog light over from left to right
-change headlights

does this mean that I have to completely replace all lights? I have checked and it seems that I do, because where the fog light should be, is the reverse light, and vice versa... and it doesn't seem that I can just change the white bit over to the other side....?

Also: where can I get cheap light sets, if I do have to change them? I am based in East London.

Any other advice on how to get a continental European car (RHD) to pass the MOT?

Don't you mean LHD?

As far as i'm aware its just the lights and the speedo (from kph -> mph)that need changing. I know jap cars need something doing to the filler neck but I think Euro cars are ok...

Oh yes I think I meant LHD. I always get confused.

Oh but if you have to change the speedometer, do they manually adjust the milage figure? Just asking, bec. my km figure now stands at 227,000......

I'm also trying to sell the Polo, so if anyone is interested, contact me. I'm looking for around 400 pounds as it still drives well...

If it has the european spec tinted rear lights (red and black) I'd be interested in buying those...

well you could always just get *one* uk spec light cluster - the foglamp side - and install it for a symmetrical and fully legal look. A foglamp is a legal / MOT requirement. A reversing light isn't. Just remember to sort the wiring out so the proper side lights up when you put the fogs on - or both! - and NEITHER come on with the reversing switch... unless you get an aftermarket reversing light with e.g. a central bumper fitting, or a pair.

Think it may well be legal to have a "mileage" that reads in Km so long as it's plain thats what happens, so long as you have miles per hour units marked somewhere on the dial.

I looked into this for someone a couple of years ago, so I wouldn't garauntee that this is up to date, but:

Speedometers are covered by the MOT at all, so you don't need to worry about that.

Your fog light doesn't have to be in the rear light cluster, so if you didn't want to swap the lights, you could just fit a seperate fog light and take the bulb out of the original one. It has to be on the offside or centre of the car. Wire it to the original switch, as you need to have warning light displayed on the dash when it's turned on.

Headlights will pass as long as the light output is high enough, and they don't dazzle other road users. That means you can use one of those continental conversion kits for driving abroad instead of changing the lights. It will reduce light output though, so Iwould't recommend keeping it that way.

@Curehead: Check your posts in the for sale section, you say Polo 3, but what body style is it? I did express an interest in it, but haven't had any feedback from you.
