So,
I’ve currently got a Volkswagen Polo S 60 1.2. Think they’re about 59 horsies. I’m looking at doing an engine swap on it.
What’s the best engine that is pretty much plug and play with decent gains available?
None of this save your money for a cheaper car malarkey, as it’s for a project.

Pretty much any engine from the same platform will fit, from a 1.2 MPI to a 2.0 TFSI.
Keep in mind you'll need to fit into the legislations of your country.
If you fit a more powerful engine, remember to upgrade brakes as well.
Engine will go together with the gearbox, engine ECU will need to be married to the tacho/key.
Easiest swap:
Engine + gearbox + tacho + locks + keys
If you can obtain a full engine with coolers/AC and front axle, that would be nice. And perhaps rear disc brakes.

Reviving this old post for a quick question.
So say I want to swap in a 2.0TDI. That would probably come from a mk6 golf or a b7 passat (?). Could I still use the original driveshafts? I assume the ones from the donor car would be too long. Also can the Polo tacho be married with the different ECU?

Drive shafts are related to the width of the gearbox, the position of the engine is the same. You can use any PQ ECU you like, like mk6 golf, passat b7, just make sure immo is compatible.

I also have a 1.2 TDI and would like to buy a bigger engine in it, I know the 6R came in a 1.6 TDI and is also a 5 speed, would the 6R 1.6 just fit in the same as a 1.2? And what other things would I have to worry about?
