256 to 280 brakes

Just out of interest, and reading some mk4 golf info, can you swap the 256mm front discs to 280mm with change of disc and pads, same calipers.
I know the bigger upgrade needs the 1.9/GTI style hubs (which I have an with brembo calipers in my shed) but the smaller fixed carrier spindles use same FsIII calipers as the golf?
Anyone carried it out or attempted?
