1.2 TDI High idle speed and fumes

Hi, every few hundred km I get high engine idle speeds of around 1000 rpm and fume smell inside the car. There's also a huge loss of power and the DPF becomes RED hot. Anyone else with a 1.2 TDI have this issue? Thanks

Sounds like your DPF is doing a forced regeneration.
I don’t have a diesel Polo, but before I got my Polo I owned a couple of diesel Golfs fitted with a DPF. From memory, tale signs in my Golfs when a forced regeneration was being performed was an increase in engine idle speed, the cooling fan running and (sometimes but not always) a burning smell. I can’t remember there being a loss of power, but maybe it’d be less noticeable with VW’s 2.0 diesel engine than it would with a lower powered 1.2 diesel.
The types of journey you’re driving will influence the frequency of forced DPF regenerations - lots of short journeys and the frequency may be be quite high. When I was aware a DPF regeneration was in progress towards the end of my journey in my Golfs, I used to try and extend the journey by a few miles so it could complete the regeneration before I reached my destination.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking it was. Was just a bit scared about the burning smell in the cabin. Thanks

Get it on the motorway, and drive it on higher rpm
